History

The company was founded in Watertown, New York in 1808 It holds the record as the paper mill in longest continuous operation in the United States. Ownership stayed with the Knowlton Brothers until the 1960’s. By 1975, under Filtration Sciences, the company grew to a five-plant operation.

In 1987, the Watertown plant was spun off and Knowlton Specialty Papers was born, a privately-held company under the ownership of Franklin Cean. In 2008, a Knowlton management group bought the assets of Knowlton Specialty Spapers. The new company is Knowlton Technologies, LLC

Products developed at Knowlton over the years have included: pulp fiber media for vacuum cleaner bags; glass media for engine filter cartridges; and non-asbestos friction papers. More recently the company has expanded in composites, ceamics and nanotechnology.

April 2008: Knowlton recently published a 34 page booklet on Knowlton's history.
