History The company was founded in Watertown, New York in 1808 It has been in continuous operation in the United States since 1808. Ownership stayed with Knowlton Brothers until the 1960’s. By 1975, under Filtration Sciences, the company grew to a five-plant operation. In 1987, the Watertown plant was spun off and Knowlton Specialty Papers was born, a privately-held company under the ownership of Franklin Cean. In 2008, a Knowlton management group bought the assets of Knowlton Specialty Papers and operates as Knowlton Technologies, LLC. Products developed at Knowlton over the years have included pulp fiber media for vacuum cleaner bags; glass media for engine filter cartridges; and non-asbestos friction papers. More recently the company has expanded in new markets - composites, ceramics and nanotechnology. April 2008: Knowlton published a 34 page booklet on Knowlton's history.
